John Higgins: ‘It’s the best week I’ve ever had in my snooker career’

John Higgins is back to his best after storming to the Players Championship title in dominating fashion – and declared his first ranking success in three years as his “best week in snooker ever”.

In fact, some pundits state the four-times world champion has never played better as Higgins cruised to a 10-3 win over long-time rival Ronnie O’Sullivan on Sunday night.

It’s Higgins 31st ranking title of his career but his first since winning the Welsh Open in 2018.

And nobody can say it was not deserved – Higgins trounced both Welsh Open winner Jordan Brown and Mark Selby without losing a frame and then thrashed Kyren Wilson 6-1 en-route to the final.

And the Scot was again in total control against O’Sullivan after winning the first five frames of the contest which completely took the final away from his opponent’s grasp.

In the whole tournament, he only lost four frames and O’Sullivan admitted to suffering from a Higgins “masterclass”.

Higgins, 45, admitted that recently he has questioned whether he could be a winner again – but a change of technique to his cue action seems to have turned his fortunes around since the turn of the year.

The slight change to his trigger position on his shot has seen the 45-year-old reach the Masters final and win the Players Championship so far in 2021.

And in this form he will be up the bookmakers list for success at the World Championship, starting in April.

Victory on Sunday night ensured Higgins will have the best preparation possible ahead of the Crucible by securing his place in the Tour Championship, which takes place in a month’s time and star’s the season’s best eight players.

Higgins said it was the best week of his snooker in his life.

“It’s the best week I’ve ever had,” he revealed.

“I’ve won world titles and different tournaments but for the whole week, the way I’ve felt and the calibre of players I’ve come up against, I’ve managed to win quite convincingly. It’s not really like me to do that.

“Normally I’d be scrapping it out, final frame deciders and alike, but I’ve done a ‘Ronnie’ this week and gone through the field pretty easy. It’s a brilliant feeling.”
