World number one Judd Trump battled back from a precarious position in his first round English Open tie.
The 2019 world champion, who won a record six ranking events last season, has failed to reach top form since the coronavirus pandemic started earlier this year.
And Trump appeared to be struggling on Tuesday night when he was trailing 3-1 to Leicester potter Louis Heathcote in their English Open encounter.
Heathcote then found himself in the scoring zone in frame 5 but under-hit a red into the top corner pocket – a mistake which proved costly.
Trump punished Heathcote’s error by taking the frame and dominating the next two frames to secure a 4-3 win.
After the match Trump said: “Louis will be very disappointed because he had chances.
“I started well but then it went scrappy. I made some good long pots in the last frame and fell over the line in the end.
“At the last tournament (the European Masters) I blew everyone away up until the semi-finals but then lost. So it can be better to start slowly. I’m still in it and I can’t play worse than I did today.
“In terms of the season, we don’t know what’s around the corner. But one day we’re going to wake up and everything will be back to normal with lots of big tournaments, so I’ll be prepared for that.”
Trump will next face China’s Yuan Sijun in the second round.
