Superb Stephen Maguire comeback stuns world champion Mark Williams

Stephen Maguire produced a sensational performance to beat world champion Mark Williams and reach the UK Championship quarter-finals.

In a remarkable match – the most dramatic of the tournament so far – Maguire looked dead and buried when Williams cruised into a 4-0 lead in the last 16 encounter.

But nobody saw what was to come – as Maguire produced a comeback he or those watching will never forget.

From 4-0 down, Maguire turned on the style in an outstanding manner as breaks of 122, 120 and 109 saw him get back into the match at 4-3 down.

And the 2004 UK Championship winner was not done there – he then won his third frame in a row without Williams scoring a single point to make it 4-4.

More quality on the table followed from Maguire as a break of 97  saw the Scot go into the lead for the first time and be just one frame away from glory – a moment that seemed totally unthinkable after the first four frames of the match.

And Maguire thought he was reaching the winning line in the tenth frame until an important missed yellow was to cost him and opened the door up again for Williams who forced a deciding frame shootout with a vital clearance.

Williams had the first chance of the final frame but could not make the most of it.

Then Maguire came back into it with a stunning long plant which led to a break of 63 which included a wonderful double on the last red after just seconds before taking more than two minutes to consider a key shot.

Maguire’s 6-5 victory will live long in the memory. He next faces either Mark Allen or Neil Robertson on Friday.

The world champion is out.
