Kyren Wilson’s sensational hot form on the baize continued today as he cruised to a 6-2 win over world number five Judd Trump.
The 2015 Shanghai Masters winner now stands just three more wins away from regaining the crown after a solid display of heavy scoring proved too hot for Trump to handle.
The match was a repeat of the Shanghai Masters final three years ago which Wilson won via final frame decider – but there was no such closeness today as Wilson dominated most of the contest to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
He will next meet the winner of the second round match between John Higgins and Ryan Day which will be played out on Wednesday. Wilson lost to Higgins in the World Championship semi-final earlier this year.
Elsewhere, world number one Mark Selby produced a dramatic late comeback to go through to the quarter-finals.
Selby looked to be in huge trouble when he trailed 5-3 to Chinese talent Zhou Yuelong but the determined three-times world champion somehow fought his way back and produced his best when he needed it the most.
Breaks of 65, 79, 50 and 64 in the last three frames were enough for the Leicester star to turn what looked to be a shock defeat into a thrilling final frame win.
Meanwhile, China’s number one star Ding Junhui hit a high break of 138 and five breaks of 50+ in a 6-3 win over Masters winner Mark Allen.
And Barry Hawkins made runs of 91, 114, 99 and 103 in a 6-3 victory over Stephen Maguire.
On Wednesday, five times world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan makes his first appearance of the season facing Australia’s Neil Robertson while world champion Mark Williams takes on Anthony McGill.
