Michael Georgiou is not guaranteed an automatic place at this year’s Champion of Champions tournament despite lifting the Snooker Shoot Out title a week ago – it has been revealed.
The Cypriot recorded the biggest win of his life when he beat Graeme Dott in the final of the ten-minute frame event last Sunday – earning him £35,000.
The victory climbed him up into the top 60 of the world rankings for the first time and also saw him clinch a place in next week’s World Grand Prix which stars 32 of this season’s best performers to date.
Georgiou is also in the running for the Champion of Champions event taking place in November. The annual event sees winners of snooker’s main competitions take part in a week event in a bid to win become the Champion of Champions and win the £100,000 cash prize.
But despite lifting the title six days ago, Georgio is by no means certain of taking part.
This is because tournament bosses have just announced the Qualifying Criteria for the tournament.
To decide who is taking part, the qualifying draw has been set by a list of 27 World Snooker tour competitions. The first 16 names to appear on this list will automatically secure a place in the Champions of Champions which will be held in November.
It has been revealed that the Snooker Shoot Out competition is one of the bottom ranked list events in the draw, meaning Georgiou has a battle on his hands to earn a place inside the top 16.
Here is the Qualifying Criteria List in order of event priority (events in bold have already taken place)
Champion of Champions 2017 – Shaun Murphy
UK Championship 2017 – Ronnie O’Sullivan

With so many events still to go during the season and into next season, the list could/is likely to include multiple winners. If that is the case then the next available player on the list within the top 16 will get the nod.
But because the Snooker Shoot Out is so low down the pecking order it means Georgiou will need several multiple winners so he can move up the order.
Georgiou could, of course, also win one of the events ranked above the Shoot Out which would make him more of a certainty. Another possibility for Georgiou is if selected winners inside the top 16 pull out of the event then he is likely to climb up the ladder.
As the list currently shows Shaun Murphy, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Allen, Mark Williams and Neil Robertson are secured a place.
The Champion of Champions will be held at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena and will be held between November 5 and 11.
