Bingham hoping to find the spark needed to get back to form

WORLD champion Stuart Bingham says he feels he can end a difficult season on a high despite admitting he is low on confidence.

The world number two has struggled the form in recent months and is yet to add another title to his name since his memorable World Championship victory less than a year ago.

Bingham’s confidence took another setback last month when he fell to a surprising first round loss to Fraser Patrick in the Gdynia Open PTC event – a result which meant he could not qualify for The Players Championship finals.

After that defeat he put up a picture on his Twitter page stating the words “I have no idea what I’m doing” as a reference to his game at the moment.

But the Basildon man will hope his form turns around for the better this week in the World Grand Prix which for him starts with a tricky first round match against David Gilbert on Wednesday.

“The last couple of months the game has just felt like an effort and I have probably been low on confidence,” Bingham said.

“Now I need to find my focus and I also want to get a bit fitter again. I stood on the scales in Poland and realised I have put on a stone.

“I remember my first coach Joe Lazarus used to say to me ‘fit body, fit mind’. It’s not always the key to playing well, but it can help when you feel better about yourself.

“Now it is time for a bit of a break then I just need to try and win at least one match in Wales next week. I still feel I can end the season well but I have just got to find that spark again and start getting results.”

The World Grand Prix starts on Tuesday (March 8).
