The Whirlwind lost 6-5 to the Glaswegian despite dominated the first half of the match.
Breaks of 77 and 104 helped the 1992 UK champion to a 3-1 lead but Maguire, who also won this event eleven years ago, came back to earn his place in the second round.
Elsewhere on the third day of the UK Championship, world number one Mark Selby made easy work of his first round match against Joe O’Connor winning 6-0 and world champion Stuart Bingham hammered Jordan Brown 6-1.
Australian Neil Robertson returned to the baize fresh of his Champion of Champions triumph with a 6-3 win over Alex Taubman.
And this season’s surprise Shanghai Masters winner Kyren Wilson booked his place in the Last 64 with a 6-3 win over Paul Davison.
World number 8 Barry Hawkins had a major scare when he fell 3-1 and 5-4 down to former professional star Andy Hicks.
But the former World Championship finalist won the final two frames to clinch his place in the next round.
Friday sees the start of the second round matches with the likes of Stuart Bingham, Shaun Murphy and John Higgins looking to progress to the third round.
