MARK Allen gained revenge on Stuart Bingham as he made amends for his recent Shanghai Masters final loss by completing a 6-4 win to reach the International Championship quarter-finals.
The Ulsterman was below par in last month’s showpiece finale and suffered a 10-3 defeat to the Essex star which denied him a third major ranking title.
But there was no repeat today (Wednesday) as Allen made an impressive finish to end Bingham’s winning run in China which saw him lift the the Shanghai Masters title and then the second Asian PTC event held last week.
Allen, winner of two World Open titles, won three of the opening four frames before Bingham pegged him back winning the next three frames to turn the match around.
But Allen turned the match on its head once again as back-to-back breaks of 100 and 117 earned him a 5-4 lead before he closed out the match winning a scrappy last frame.
After the match Allen said: “I’m very happy with the way I played today, my safety was probably as good as it’s ever been.”
Allen will next meet Michael White who continued his promising start to the season with a 6-2 win over Ian Burns.
Level at 2-2 White, who reached the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters followed by a semi-fun in the Bulgarian Open, won four frames on the bounce to make the last eight.
Red hot favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan was in ruthless form as he cruised into the quarter-finals with a 6-1 hammering over China’s Li Hang.
The Rocket faces an intriguing last eight encounter with former world champion Mark Williams who continued his good run this week with a 6-4 win over Sam Baird.
Meanwhile on the bottom half of the draw, Marco Fu battled his way to a 6-4 win over Rod Lawler.
Fu, who reached the final of the International Championship last year, will next face Robert Milkins who beat Xiao Guodong by the same score.
The other quarter-final will be played out between Ricky Walden and Jamie Burnett who pulled off wins against Tuesday’s headline maker Joe Swail and Peter Ebdon respectively.
