Mark Davis
SNOOKER’s answer to T20 Cricket will be the theme when Thailand hosts the annual Six Red World Championship over the coming days.
Now in its fourth year, some of the world’s top stars will take to the stage in Bangkok to compete to win snooker’s shortest format competition – one of the most unique events in the calendar.
The past two years has seen Mark Davis lift the non-ranking event trophy after beating Shaun Murphy and Neil Robertson in the last two finals. Davis will be seeking to achieve a brilliant hat-trick in the next few days.
Eight groups of six players consisting of professional and amateur competitors (see below) will battle it out in a round-robin format over the course of the first three days. The top four players from each group will then enter the knockout phase with the final taking place on Saturday, September 6.
Crucible champion Mark Selby, winner of the first ‘official’ Six Red World Championship in 2011, is in the 64-man invitational line-up as are former world champions John Higgins, Mark Williams, Graeme Dott Shaun Murphy and Ken Doherty.
Six-time World Championship finalist Jimmy White is also in the draw joining other top stars such as Ricky Walden, Barry Hawkins, Stephen Maguire and Stuart Bingham.
Despite not having the intense drama associated with the traditional 15-red game, the tournament should be fun to watch and gives one of the 64 men taking part to land some silverware and a cash winning prize in the region of £50,000.
All the action starts on Monday (September 1). Follow us on Twitter @TOGB_Snooker for updates.
