FORMER world champion Peter Ebdon came back from behind to knock Judd Trump out of the China Open.
Trump looked set for a second round victory when he led 4-3 but Ebdon, who won the China Open two years ago, won the final two frames to earn a place in the third round.
After forcing a deciding frame against the world number five star, Ebdon clinched victory with a break of 86 to set up a third round tie against Ali Carter who beat Matthew Selt.
“I proved today I’m still capable of beating the best players in the world,” Ebdon said after the match.
Elsewhere, Jimmy White looks well set to remain on tour next season after he beat Alfie Burden 5-3 to make the last 16 in Beijing. His impressive run this week has seen him climb up to 59th place in the end-of-season money list – comfortably placed in he top 64 needed to stay on the tour.
White will next face Mark Selby who had no problem making the third round – beating Nigel Bond 5-1.
World number one Neil Robertson had to come through his second successive final frame decider in the tournament as a 5-4 win over Mark Williams put him in the last 16 of the tournament. In the first round Robertson, the defending champion, beat Anthony Hamiliton in a nine-frame encounter.
Robertson’s next opponent will be China’s Yu Delu who continued his recent good form with a 5-1 win over James Wattana.
Mike Dunn’s battle to stay on tour gathered pace as he reached the last 16 after beating Tian Pengfei 5-3.
Ding Junhui set up a mouth-watering tie against John Higgins following a 5-3 win over Thepchaiya Un-Nooh. Higgins beat Michael White 5-1.
Englishman Mark King recorded an impressive 5-3 win over Marco Fu and will next face world number 94 Jamie O’Neill who continues to be the biggest surprise of the tournament following his second round win over Fergal O’Brien.
Day 3 also saw wins for Luca Brecel, Graeme Dott, Shaun Murphy, Ricky Walden and Craig Steadman.
