Selby and Maguire out as Shoot Out begins in thrilling style

13659THE 2014 Snooker Shoot Out got off to a dramatic start last night as two of the world’s top stars suffered early exits.

World number two Mark Selby and world number five Stephen Maguire were the biggest casualties on a thrilling night of quick-fire snooker at Blackpool’s Circus Arena.

Selby lost out to China’s Cao Yupeng in the ten-minute, fast paced one frame competition and Maguire lost to Liam Highfield.

Defending champion Martin Gould also crashed out losing to Zhang Anda in a 40-14 defeat.

The night, to the delight of a packed crowd, some several thrilling matches which went down to the wire in the final seconds.

David Gilbert clinched a dramatic 41-40 win over Scotland’s Anthony McGill by potting the black in the very final seconds of the match of the night.

Dave Harold was to reflect on what could have been after he ran out of time to clinch victory. His pot on the blue was deemed out of the time meaning he lost by a single point to Jamie Cope 53-52.

And Luca Brecel thought he made it through when he potted the final colours in the final moment only to see the pink rattle the jaws of the pocket and lead to win a for a relieved Ben Woollaston.

The highest break of the tournament so far was made by Alfie Burden whose run of 96 helped him to a convincing win against Paul Davison.

Michael White also impressed with a 93 break in his win over Barry Pinches.

The action resumes later today (12pm).
