JIMMY White’s hopes of making his first appearance at the Crucible in seven years crumbled after he suffered defeat to Robert Milkins.
White, whose wins against Tian Pengfei and Xiao Guodong put him just one win away from entering this year’s World Championship, found Milkins a step too far as the Gloucestershire star went through with a 10-5 win.
Sam Baird will be among the debutants at the Crucible next week after he thrashed Joe Perry 10-3 which included a top break of 142. Baird reaches the Crucible after winning four qualifying matches within a week.
But former world champion Ken Doherty will not be competing in this year’s World Championship after he lost to Matthew Selt despite producing a mesmerising comeback.
Leading 6-3 overnight, Selt looked set for a comfortable victory when he won three of the first four frames in the afternoon session to go 9-4 up. But the 1997 world champion came storming back and won five frames in a row to take the match into a decider.
But Selt managed to weather the storm and held his nerve when it mattered winning the 19th frame to earn a debut spot at the Crucible.
Baird and Selt join Saturday’s winners of Jack Lisowski, Dechawat Poomjaeng, Michael White and Ben Woollaston who will make their debuts at the Crucible next week.
Elsewhere, there was heartbreak for Chinese star Yu Delu who fell to an agonising final frame defeat to Mark King. Delu could not get over the winning line despite having leads of 8-6 and 9-8 towards the end of the match.
Former world champion Peter Ebdon avoided a scare as he recovered from 8-6 down to defeat Norway’s Kurt Maflin and Martin Gould came out a 10-7 winner in a long and enduring nine-hour match against Rod Lawler.
Marcus Campbell will be playing in his fourth World Championship after he comfortably beat Liam Highfield 10-4 and Welshman Dominic Dale had a safe passage through to the Crucible with victory over Alfie Burden.
Martin Gould, who won the Sky Snooker Shootout earlier this season, came out on top in a long nine-hour match with Rod Lawler – winning 10-7.
UK Championship semi-finalist Mark Davis booked his place at the Crucible with a 10-6 win over China’s Liang Wenbo and Alan McManus, who secured his first appearance at the Crucible in seven years after beating Tom Ford 10-5.
On Monday the sixteen qualifiers will be entered in the draw for the first round of the World Championship starting on Saturday (April 20).
One lucky qualifier will play returning star and defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in one of the tournament’s opening matches.
