MARK Selby remained on course to win three major titles in a row after beating China star Ding Junhui earlier today.
The Jester from Leicester, who in the last two months has lifted both the UK Championship and The Masters titles, booked his place into the German Masters quarter finals with a 5-3 win and will play Barry Hawkins tonight in a bid to reach the last four.
Despite losing the first frame, Selby showed the Berlin crowd why he is currently the dominant force in the game by winning the next four frames to take a significant 4-1 lead.
Ding battled back winning the next two frames but Selby was not to be denied another victory and claimed the eighth frame and the match with an impressive break of 48.
Elsewhere, Shaun Murphy won a thrilling match against Scotland’s Graeme Dott which went all the way to a deciding frame.
Murphy made a 127 break to lead 3-1 before Dott got back to 3-3 with a top run of 94. After the next two frames were shared, it was Murphy who had the last laugh as a cool and calm break of 57 in the decider got him over the winning line. Next up for Murphy is Australian Neil Robertson.
This afternoon also saw the end of Peter Lines’ good run in the tournament after he lost out to Hong Kong’s Marco Fu. Lines, who beat world champions John Higgins and Ken Doherty in his run to the last 16, was unable to continue his winning ways in a 5-3 defeat. Fu will meet Welshman Matthew Stevens
Last season’s world championship runner-up Ali Carter increased his chances of winning silverware this week after he beat Anthony Hamilton. Carter cruised to a 3-0 lead before the Nottingham star, who knocked out Judd Trump on Thursday, got back into contention winning the next two frames.
But Carter stopped the mini-fightback and went on to take the next two frames and seal a place in the last eight. Carter will play Michael Holt tonight for a semi-final place.
