JOHN Higgins’ resurgence in form continued as he sailed into the Shanghai Masters quarter finals with a 5-0 whitewash victory over Ryan Day.
The four-times world champion followed on from where he finished off on Wednesday in his win over Welshman Jamie Jones yesterday as top breaks of 57 and 53 saw the Wizard of Wishaw brush aside his opponent in convincing style.
The 81 minute whitewash win means Higgins’ goes into his quarter final tie with Ali Carter tomorrow (Friday) having won an impressive nine frames on the bounce.
This year’s World Championship runner-up Carter also impressed on the fourth day of the competition beating Stephen Maguire without dropping a single frame and hit a top break of 120.
Higgins will not be the only Scot still representing his country in Shanghai as Graeme Dott thumped Stephen Lee 5-1 to book his place into the late eight.
Dott will take on Bristol star Judd Trump who yet again impressed with a mixture of fine potting and solid safety play during his 5-2 win over Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen.
The surprise of the day saw Joe Perry thrash 2010 world champion Neil Robertson 5-0. Breaks of 67, 75 and 61 saw the world number 23 beat the out-of-sorts Australian.
Perry will play Welshman Mark Williams who battled his way to a 5-2 win over Ricky Walden. Despite Walden levelling the contest twice with breaks of 95 and 112, it was the two-times world champion who pulled away after the interval winning the next three frames with a top break of 67.
At the top of the draw, Stuart Bingham continued his fine season on the table with a thumping 5-1 win over Jamie Cope.
And Bingham will meet Shaun Murphy who had the better of Mark King in their last 16 match up. The Magician sailed to a 3-0 lead before King fought back with breaks of 115 and 55 to go just 3-2 behind.
But the 2005 world champion resumed control of the contest winning the sixth frame to go within a single frame of victory. Then after King pulled another frame back, Murphy saw off his opponent by winning frame eight and completed a 5-3 win to reach another world ranking quarter final.
