PartyPoker Premier League – Event 2
Group A: Neil Robertson 5-1 Mark Selby
Group B: Peter Ebdon 5-1 Stephen Lee
NEIL Robertson and Peter Ebdon began their Premier League campaigns with convincing victories as this year’s PartyPoker Premier League competition resumed for its second event.
The event which took place in Biddulph in Staffordshire saw Ebdon, last season’s China Open champion, play his first ever Premier League match against Stephen Lee who was looking to improve after his 5-1 drubbing to Judd Trump on the opening night.
Ebdon, renowned for not being the quickest player in the world circuit, seemed to have no problem adjusting to the 25 second shot clock format by taking the first two frames of the Group B match.
Last season’s PTC Grand Finals winner hit back with a break of 87 to go just one frame behind but that was to be the world’s number 8 only joy as Ebdon took the remaining frames.
Ebdon showed good form with breaks of 80, 83 and 103 to record an impressive 5-1 win. Having lost both of his matches so far, Lee has it all to do if he has any hopes of making the semi-finals.
The night switched to the Group A encounter as Robertson showed the Biddulph crowd the kind of form which saw him lift The Masters trophy in January against world number 1 Selby.
The Australian guaranteed himself at least a share of the spoils by racing into a 3-0 lead in style with breaks of 63 and 72.
Selby then snatched the fourth frame to keep hold of his chances of earning a comeback draw but the Australian proved too hot to handle taking the next two frames and eased to a 5-1 win.
The PartyPoker Premier League resumes next Thursday (September 13) in Carlisle. The night will see 2005 world champion Shaun Murphy take on Stuart Bingham and four times world champion John Higgins opens his Premier League campaign against Mark Allen.
