WORLD-NUMBER-ONE Mark Selby gained sweet revenge over Barry Hawkins to book his place in the last 16 of the Wuxi Classic which began today.
Selby, who lost to Hawkins 10-3 in the opening round of the World Championship in April, began his defence of the Wuxi title with an impressive 5-2 win which included two century breaks.
Despite losing the first frame, breaks of 62, 120 and 57 saw the Leicester man take a 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval.
A tanned Hawkins, who had just returned from his honeymoon in Cyprus, clawed a frame back after the restart but Selby completed the win with another century break of 101 and 88 to secure a place in the second round where he will meet the winner of Martin Gould or Jamie Cope.
Other games played today were wildcard round matches which saw two shocks with Michael Holt and Dave Harold crashing out of the competition on the opening day.
Holt lost 5-1 to 16-year-old Zhu Yinghui who won five frames in a row to shock the Nottingham potter and earn a last 32 meeting with Ricky Walden.
And Harold had a day to forget in China after suffering a defeat by the same scoreline to Raouzi Maimaiti. The Chinese wildcard will play Mark Allen in the last 32 round.
Elsewhere Fergal O’Brien, Rod Lawler, Jamie Burnett and Robert Milkins avoided wildcard round defeats and booked their places for the last 32 stage and will play Ali Carter, Stephen Maguire, Neil Robertson and Andrew Higginson respectively.
