THE OPENING day of the PTC Grand Finals saw a couple of surprise results as professional snooker returned to action in Galway, Ireland.
Chinese youngster Xiao Guodong pulled off the shock of the day beating Welshman and former PTC winner Dominic Dale 4-2 to set up a last 16 tie with UK Championship winner Judd Trump.
Trump was sitting in the crowd to cheer on his mate Jack Lisowski earlier on in the day and it obviously helped him as the 20-year-old Cheltenham potter beat Barry Hawkins 4-3 in another surprise scoreline. Liswoski will meet Masters winner Neil Robertson in the next round.
Mark Davis looked in good form and recorded an impressive 4-1 win against Leicester’s Tom Ford to set up a second round clash with Scotland’s Stephen Maguire.
Haikou World Open runner-up Stephen Lee returned to action for the first time since his final defeat to Mark Allen just ten days ago and got back to winning ways beating Martin Gould 4-1. Lee will play Nottingham’s Michael Holt for a place in the quarter finals.
Elsewhere there were easy whitewash wins for Ricky Walden and Joe Perry who beat Matthew Stevens and Fergal O’Brien respectively to make it through to the last 16.
Two more first round matches take place tomorrow (Thursday) before the last 16 stage begins. John Higgins will play Welshman Jamie Jones and English youngster Ben Woollaston will be hoping to complete a major scalp when he takes on recent Welsh Open winner Ding Junhui.
