Welsh Open 2012 – Day 4 Report

RONNIE O’Sullivan continued his fine form with a convincing win over Mark Williams to book his place into the quarter-finals of the Welsh Open.

The Rocket took just over an hour to complete his seventh straight victory in a ranking event with the match getting off to a superb start when O’Sullivan hit a break of 125 to take the opening frame. But Williams then showed his class and responded with a 131 clearance to level the scores.

Ronnie regained the lead with a 96 break clearance but the decisive moment of the match came in the fourth frame. Williams had the chance to level at 2-2 but missed a red with the rest when leading 49-23. O’Sullivan duly punished the Welshman to take a 3-1 lead.

Williams had chances to reduce his deficit and stay in the contest but failed to take full advantage and the recent German Masters winner took the frame to win the match 4-1.

O’Sullivan will play a mouth-watering quarter-final with Judd Trump who tonight beat Stuart Bingham 4-1. Despite going a frame behind, the wonder kid of snooker compiled breaks of 73, 73, 100 and 49 to put him in the last eight.

Mark Allen recorded his second whitewash in two days beating Stephen Hendry 4-0 and world number one Mark Selby eased through past Martin Gould.

Stephen Maguire’s good run of form continued with a 4-2 win over Matthew Stevens and Stephen Lee beat Tom Ford 4-1 to make into the last eight of the tournament.
